Isn’t it interesting how many people have been affected by this book? Almost everybody I know is aware of some part or other of the story, whether it be the tale of uncle Podger hanging a picture, the sad fact that all of us want things that others have and vise versa (oak paneling) and indeed the fury that can be aroused in us all by an unopenable tin of pineapple!
It is part of the authors skill that these wanderings have any connection at all with the story of a boat trip! But to me they are inseperable.A couple of wanderings of my own……..
I have attended a one man show of Three Men in a Boat, by Rodney Bewes ( “The likely lads”) maybe it was your show Jeremy?
And to illustrate how “jeromian” I have become, I spend a lot of time on my boat on the Thames (as does Rodney on his, incidentally) and I have actually followed the route of the original trip, using only the book as my guide!!23rd August 2013 at 8:37 pm #217AndrewKeymasterORIGINALLY POSTED BY bercired 08 April, 2005, 04:53:34 PM
First I read it in Hungarian and loved it immediately and now I am living in London and I have just read it in Ennglish and it has the same effect on me. The funny thing is that now I live in Kew, three minutes walk from the riverbank and I think I’ll go and rent a “steamlaunch”.

I doubt VERY much that you will be able to hire a steam boat!!however, jokes apart, I think you might be able to hire a skiff, which is the type of craft the famous three made their trip in. I think you might enjoy it more, as the operation of a steam boat is a very time consuming bussiness indeed. I speak from experience, and believe me , between stoking the fire, filling the boiler, lubricating the motion, and general attention to the works, you dont even have time to watch the world go by.let alone drift off into a “brown study” as Jerome was prone to do.

I have thought of doing that…was it fun? Or was it completely rained out.. like their return journey! ❓
